Department of Phytochemistry

Definition

Phytochemistry of herbal chemistry is the study of chemical compounds in plants especially the bioactive materials in medicinal herbs. Phytochemicals are the secondary metabolic substances found in plants. These show a number of biological effects such as anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, anti-cancer, etc. Techniques commonly used in the field of phytochemistry are extraction, isolation, purification, and structural elucidation of natural products by spectroscopy (MS, NMR, IR, UV) as well as various chromatography techniques (HPLC, LC-MS, GC-MS)
